Questions for a comet

We call you NEOWISE after the telescope that saw you.

What’s your real name, in your native language?

I see you frozen in falling every night this week.

A magnificent tiny space splash of light.

I see you blaze a new celestial path, falling with fire, light, slowly at high speed, off the screen of perception for thousands of years.

How does it feel to fall that fast and still be near the Big Dipper?

Are you actually falling or our we falling together?

Do you plan to catch up with other comets on the same path?

What are your plans for the roughly 7,000 years until you return?

Do you believe in astrology?

Are you lonely?

What are your pronouns? Are you a non-binary cosmo? Cosmic fluid?

Do you feel like a tiny smudge, insignificant in the scheme of the cosmos or is this your moment?

Will you change while you’re gone; will we recognize you when you come back, will we be here? Will we recognize ourselves?

Wouldn’t it be funny if next time around, in approximately 7 millennia, you’re a person and I’m a comet?
